San Francisco is a great city for walking. With a good pair of shoes and a Muni ticket, you can see almost everything. The city is built on hills, but the locals don’t mind. There are plenty of bike lanes and you can rent a bike cheaply. For trips outside the city the best option is to rent a car.

In 1906 an earthquake destroyed most of the city. As a result, fires broke out because most houses were made of wood. It took three days to get the fire under control and years to rebuild the city. In 1989 another massive earthquake hit San Francisco. Again, many buildings were destroyed.

During World War II San Francisco became a shipbuilding centre. The port dealt with many passengers and lots of cargo. With time, shipbuilding moved to other places along the coast. Today San Francisco is a finance and trade centre. It produces clothes and sells food products from local farms.

Another big business in San Francisco is tourism. The cable car is a popular tourist attraction. It is recognised around the globe. It was designed to go up and down the city’s hills. By 1890 there was a network covering 150 km. Today there are only three lines left which stay in operation mainly as an icon of the city.
