COLOURS IN VAN GOGH’S MASTERPIECES

adapted from www.dogonews.com and www.dailymail.co.uk
Zadanie 4.1.
Vincent Van Gogh is one of the most famous painters. His mother was a painter but she didn’t share her knowledge with Vincent. In fact, he learnt to paint all by himself. Seeing his talent, his brother Theo strongly advised him to take up painting. In his lifetime, Van Gogh painted more than 2,000 masterpieces. His best ones, however, were created during the last two years of his life when he was staying in a mental hospital. Ironically, Van Gogh’s talent was not recognized while he was alive and he sold only one painting, the Red Vineyard, during his lifetime.

Zadanie 4.2.
One of his most recognized paintings is the Field with Irises near Arles. It is the first of the 130 paintings the artist created during the two years when he was treated in a mental hospital just before his death. The painting is extremely popular among art collectors. There are also many other paintings by Van Gogh that have sold for record prices at auctions. Field with Irises near Arles looks exceptionally good, except for one thing – the purple colour in the irises has started to turn blue.

The idea that one of the colours in Van Gogh’s paintings may be changing appeared when some scientists were restoring colours of a painting by another artist who had used the same paints as Van Gogh. Comparing photos of the paintings, they noticed that the purple colour had slightly changed. Naturally, they also decided to check Van Gogh’s artworks. The researchers haven’t carried out any tests of the paint to prove the change yet. However, they have studied the letters which Van Gogh wrote to his brother and sister. He described the colours in detail, and this allowed the scientists to reconstruct the original colour. It turned out that the colour is a different shade now. In this way, they realised the purple paint had started to turn blue.

How did the scientists prove that the colour in Van Gogh’s painting is changing?

Fragment tekstu do dwóch poniższych pytań.

There were several theories why the purple colour had changed. It was noticed that the red pigment Van Gogh used gets lighter with time. Some scientists claimed the change was caused by the sunlight. Others thought the chemical used to renovate the paintings was responsible. They even believed that air pollution might cause the change. However, a few months ago scientists found out that the light from the lamps illuminating paintings in art galleries reacted with the pigment used in the paint and resulted in colour change. It is believed that the paintings will never regain the original colour. For the time being, to slow down the process, lamps producing less light have been installed.
